Why Montessori Bead Bars Have Different Colours | Montessori Math Explained
Share
In Montessori Math, each number from 1 to 9 has a specific colour. These coloured bead bars are used throughout many Montessori mathematics activities.
Children learn to recognize the colours and their corresponding numbers through hands-on work with Montessori bead bars.
1- red
2 - green
3- pink
4 - yellow
5 - light blue
6 - purple
7 - white
8 - brown
9 - dark blue
10 - gold
Children count the beads in each bar and match them with the corresponding number.
The coloured bead bars can be used with wooden number tiles.
You can also use our number learning board with bead bars for hands-on number learning.
The same colour scheme continues into higher-level Montessori mathematics materials.
Children use these familiar colours in activities such as skip counting and learning multiplication tables with Montessori bead chains.
The same Montessori color coding is used throughout many math concepts, including:
- Square Numbers
- Cube Numbers
- Algebra (x² and x³)
When children become familiar with the bead colors for numbers 1–9, they can instantly associate each color with its corresponding quantity. This consistent color system helps children remember math facts more easily and builds a strong foundation for advanced mathematical concepts.
As shown in the video below, our son places the bead bars without counting them one by one. He recognizes the colors and immediately knows the corresponding numbers. This demonstrates how the Montessori color-coding system supports quick number recognition and mathematical understanding.
Story Behind the Camera
I asked our top designer and product tester (my big boy!) to film a demonstration of our new Wooden Number Board with Bead Bars.
Unfortunately, he failed... 😆
He is so familiar with the Montessori bead colors that he placed all the bead bars without counting them. The moment he sees a color, he already knows the number it represents.
That’s the beauty of Montessori color coding—it helps children recognize quantities instantly and makes learning math facts feel natural and effortless.
