Montessori number learning 11-19

After learning the colors and number of 1-9, we started to learn the teens number.

Teens: #11-99

We have a teen tray to hold the tens and color bead bars together.

It is easier for a child to take out individual bar to practice.

(more details about the colors and bead bars in this post)

For this activity, you need:

- colored bead bars 1-9

- 9 ten bead bars

- wooden tiles 1-9 and 10-90

- ten and unit tray

Step1: start with 10 and 1

Take one ten bead bar and 1 bar (red bar), lay them down as shown in picture.

(Make sure the ten bar is on the left side)

Take out the wooden tile 10 and 1.

Overlap the tiles to make 11

Put all materials back to tray

Step 2: 10&2

Take one ten bead bar and 2 bar (green bar), lay them down as shown in picture.

(Make sure the ten bar is on the left side)

Take out the wooden tile 10 and 2.

Overlap the tiles to make 12

You can use to continue until 10&9 to make 19 or

do the little task in the following video before introduce #13 - #19

 A little task for #12 and #21

Sometimes, I like to play a little guessing game in this step. I will show 12 and 21 at the same time and ask the child to match the tiles with the corresponding bead bars.

The child response shows me if he/she is solid with the concept of ten and unit.

Put all materials back to tray

Step3: Start with 20&1 to 20&9

It is recommended to repeat step1&2 until the child master the concept and ten and unit.

When a child is ready, you can move to this step

Take 2 ten bead bar and 1 bar (red bar), lay them down as shown in picture.

(Make sure the ten bar is on the left side)

Take out the wooden tile 20 and 1.

Overlap the tiles to make 21

Put all materials back to tray. Continue until 20&9 to make 29

Step4: Start with 30&1 to 30&9

Step5: Start with 40&1 to 40&9

Step6: Start with 50&1 to 50&9

Step7: Start with 60&1 to 60&9

Step8: Start with 70&1 to 70&9\

Step9: Start with 80&1 to 80&9

Step10: Start with 90&1 to 90&9

After step 10, a child should be able to see the difference between 56 and 65.
